Acne: Possible New Treatments And Research

Although most commonly attributed to hormone changes in puberty, acne is not just limited to teenagers. According to Medical News Today, more than 85% of people in the U.S. alone have experienced acne between the ages of 12 and 24.

Acne can occur for a number of reasons. Genetics, menstruation, emotional distress, diet, weather and pollution are just a few potential factors that can effect the condition of your skin.”, says Dr. John Browning, MD, Principal Investigator and founder of Texas Dermatology and Laser Specialists group.

Acne can be defined as an epidermal condition that occurs when the hair follicles become plugged with dead skin cells, skin oil and bacteria build up. Mayo Clinic indicates that there are several different forms of acting depending on the severity of infection: whiteheads, blackheads, papules, nodules and cystic lesions.

“The presence of acne not only may lead to long term scarring, but also may impact social interaction, self-esteem. Early prevention is crucial to minimizing these effects.”, continued Dr. Browning.

Dermatologists at Texas Dermatology and Laser Specialists are now seeking volunteers for a clinical trial focused on developing a new treatment for acne.

“Our research department is committed to understanding the condition and helping the medical community test potential new treatment options. Clinical trial volunteers will receive study-related care and medication at no cost and may receive compensation for time and travel,” says Dr. Browning.
