Your Kids and Hand-washing: What you need to know

What is that? You notice something is different about your child’s skin. It could be a rash, allergic reaction, or it could be something quite different.

Children are prone to different skin problems as a result of their environment at school and their lower immunity. Common skin problems can include hives, allergic reactions, warts, ringworm, or impetigo. Let’s discuss some common pediatric skin problems and ways to prevent them.

Ringworm

Ringworm is not caused by a worm as it would seem, but rather by a fungus. It is spread by skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal and can be transferred by sharing clothes or towels.

Warts

Caused by a virus, warts are easily spread from person to person. They can also spread by touching an object used by a person with the virus. To help prevent warts from spreading, tell your child not to pick them.

Impetigo

Impetigo creates sores and blisters commonly found around the mouth and nose. It is caused by bacteria and is spread by close contact or touching the same objects.

Preventative tips

These skin conditions can easily spread by sharing toys, clothing, and towels. Teach your children to wash their hands often to prevent spreading of germs and infections. A fun rule is to sing the tune of happy birthday twice to get a thorough hand washing.

Common objects that are prone to germs and bacteria are door knobs, kitchen counters, toys, and electronic devices. Disinfect these objects and areas regularly to help prevent germs and bacteria from spreading.
