Our experienced dermatologists provide phototherapy for pityriasis.

ABOUT PITYRIASIS

Pityriasis starts with a pink or reddish oval-shaped spot on the skin. With a lightened center in the spot, it can appear similar to ringworm. It continues to appear or spread throughout the body, particularly on the lower body and trunk. The pityriasis rashes can also be inflamed and scaly, depending on the type and severity of the case. The cause of this disease is unknown, and therefore there is no specific treatment.

PITYRIASIS TYPES

There are two types of pityriasis, including pityriasis lichenoides and pityriasis rosea. Pityriasis rosea is the most common form. Often linked to a viral infection, rashes caused by pityriasis rosea usually clear in one to three months. However therapy provides faster relief. Pityriasis lichenoides is characterized by scaly lesions or bumps that can spread into the hundreds and cause scarring. Pityriasis lichenoides is linked to several autoimmune disorders, including mononucleosis, HIV, and some forms of hepatitis.

PHOTOTHERAPY TREATMENT

For clearing up the skin from both types of pityriasis, phototherapy or ultraviolet light treatment is very effective. Treatment typically produces results in several weeks. If there is an autoimmune condition or virus causing pityriasis lichenoides, the underlying cause must also be treated to sustain the results from phototherapy.
