Our experienced dermatologists in New Braunfels, TX provide treatments for fungal infections.

About Fungal Infections

Also referred to as tinea, Fungal infections are a common skin concern among patients of all ages. In addition to the skin, your hair and nails can also be affected by fungal infections. Fungal infections include various types such as jock itch, ringworm and athletes foot.

Fungal Infections Causes

Often developing on parts of the body that are moist or warm, an overgrowth of microscopic organisms causes fungal infections to develop. Infections are contagious, and can spread through skin contact. Fungal infections are also transferred through pets, and sharing items such as towels, clothing, cosmetics and other items.

Fungal Infection Symptoms

With a fungal infection, skin may become red, scaly, itchy or raised. Often rounded patches develop on the skin with a red outline, as with ringworm. Discoloration of the skin and blisters are also symptoms related to fungal infections. Bald patches may appear on infected areas that normally have hair growth. Toenails or fingernails that are infected may become discolored and thicker.

Treatment for Fungal Infections

Fungal infections can usually be treated with topical medications. Oral medications are also used to treat persistent or severe infections. A skin examination by a professional dermatologist is needed for prescribing the best treatment option.
