What are Red Birthmarks?
Red birthmarks are a vascular malformation, or an irregular growth of blood vessels. Developing before birth or shortly after, there are a variety of types of vascular birthmarks that differ in appearance.
Vascular Birthmark Types
- Strawberry hemangioma – usually has a dark red appearance. Most commonly occurs on the face and neck, strawberry marks can also form on other parts of the body.
- Salmon patch – has a flat surface that is made up of small pink spots. Very common among newborns, a salmon patch is also called stork bite. Salmon patches typically appear on the forehead, neck or face.
- Port-wine stain – begins with a slight discoloration, changes to darker red or purple if left untreated. Also called nevus flammeus, a port-wine stain is most often located on the face. However port-wine stains can also cover large areas of the body.
