What are Skin Biopsies?
A skin biopsy involves the removal of skin cells, moles, lesions and other skin growths. Biopsies are also performed for diagnostics. Biopsies are typically a quick procedure with a short healing time. An outpatient procedure, a local anesthetic is used to numb a localized area.
Several types of skin biopsies are performed for varying skin conditions, including:
- Punch Biopsy – a quick biopsy method, with a small cut made using a round knife. Typically does not require stitches, depending on the size.
- Shave Biopsy – removes only the top layers of the skin with a blade or scalpel. Usually does not require stitches.
- Incisional Biopsy – a large piece of skin is removed with a scalpel blade. Stitches are needed in most cases.
