Texas Dermatology and Laser Specialists provides phototherapy for vitiligo, and a full range of treatments for skin conditions.
What is Vitiligo?
With the skin condition vitiligo, the cells that produce melanin in the skin (melanocytes) are destroyed. This produces a loss of skin pigment and white patches on the skin. Vitiligo also affects the eyes and mucous membranes. Most common on areas of skin that are frequently exposed to the sun, vitiligo can appear on any part of the body.
Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder that progresses with time, although it is generally not considered to be a serious condition. It is also not contagious. Vitiligo has been linked to other medical conditions, including anemia, hyperthyroidism and lupus.
Phototherapy for Vitiligo
Restoring skin pigment with ultraviolet light, phototherapy is the preferred treatment for vitiligo. Phototherapy treatments are administered over time, with results in as little as a few weeks depending on your condition.
