DR. SHANNAN MCCANN, MD

Dr. Shannan E. McCann, a pediatric dermatologist, is quadruple Board Certified in Pediatric Dermatology, general Dermatology, Pediatrics, and Adolescent Medicine. Graduating cum laude with a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Washington, she further distinguished herself by obtaining an M.Ed. in Secondary Education from Milligan College, earning the highest GPA and recognition as the Delta Kappa Gamma Student Teacher of the Year.

Dr. McCann earned her Doctor of Medicine at James H. Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University in 2002 where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. After completing a residency in Pediatrics and fellowship in Adolescent Medicine through the Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC), she served as the Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. At Keesler, her clinic was in the same hall as dermatology, fueling her passion for skin conditions and inspiring her to complete a residency in dermatology through SAUHSEC. She finished a fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Texas Children’s Hospital in 2018 to become the first pediatric dermatologist ever in the United States Air Force. As the sole dermatologist in the Department of Defense, she consulted on military children worldwide and advised the Air Force, Army, and Navy dermatology consultants to the US Surgeon Generals on pediatric dermatology issues.

From 2018-2023, she has been core faculty for one of the largest dermatology programs in the nation training dermatology and pediatric residents. She was honored in 2022 when selected for the coveted Distinguished Dermatology Faculty Award in recognition of her commitment to teaching and mentoring. She has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of skin conditions in both children and adults, and is skilled in lasers, cosmetics, and surgical procedures. Dr. McCann’s expertise encompasses laser safety in medical procedures, backed by obtaining the National Medical Laser Safety Officer Certification.

Her academic appointments have included Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Dermatology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. McCann’s commitment also extends to community service, illustrated by her leadership in humanitarian missions in Vietnam, Honduras, and Moldova, and her volunteering in a student-run clinic at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Dr. McCann’s contributions to research are profound and wide-ranging. With a focus on pediatric dermatology, she has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals such as Cutis, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Pediatrics, and American Family Physician. She has published textbook chapters and lectured at major conferences internationally and nationally shedding light on essential aspects of this field. As a member of organizations including the American Academy of Dermatology, Society for Pediatric Dermatology, Texas Dermatological Society, and American Academy of Pediatrics, her unyielding dedication to medical excellence is evident.

Dr. McCann holds an impressive array of qualifications and professional achievements in the fields of Dermatology and Pediatric Dermatology with a seamless blend of military education and medical pursuits. Dr. McCann has been happily married for over 25 years and has two children. She enjoys her church, traveling with her family, gardening, and decorating.
