Fillers are unique gels that doctors use to restore the fullness we lose during aging. Most well-known fillers among patients use hyaluronic acid (HA) in their formulation. HA is a substance that naturally occurs in the body and as a filler, creates temporary soft, natural contours while easing the appearance of wrinkles. In a rush for results, we often overlook the biostimulatory category of fillers, such as Sculptra®. The FDA recently expanded its approved uses and, in turn, the treatment possibilities. Here’s all you need to know about Sculptra®.
How Does Sculptra® Work?
Sculptra® is a biostimulatory filler. These types of fillers address the underlying cause of facial aging. The gel formulation is made of a strong polymer called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which kickstarts the body’s natural creation of collagen. You can enjoy longer-lasting fullness because it helps restore your skin’s inner structure and volume.
Once Sculptra® is in place, PLLA creates a biostimulatory effect within the tissues that improves the collagen locally, right below those wrinkles. The collagen creation progresses over the next 6 to 12 weeks to improve the skin tone while softening the appearance of those wrinkles over time. It’s a slow, gradual effect but gives the best and most natural results over time.
Procedure, Recovery, and Results
Sculptra® is injected with a thin needle that deposits the solution at a specific depth along your wrinkles. Our specialists use multiple injections to produce even, natural-looking results. For optimal results, a series of treatments is typically the recommendation. No recovery or downtime is necessary after the injections. However, a small amount of swelling and redness around the injection points is expected and may last about one to two days.
You will notice your wrinkles are a little less visible after your injections, then improve more gradually over the next several weeks it takes for collagen to develop. Sculptra® results can last up to two years. However, factors that will influence the longevity of your results are:
- How quickly your body breaks down the new collagen
- If your skin undergoes any additional aging from sun exposure which is known to break down collagen
