From social media figures to reality television stars, there are plenty of myths surrounding botulinum toxin therapy, commonly known as Botox. We’ll be debunking some common myths surrounding the subject.
First, what is Botox®?
Botox® is a purified form of botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that works by relaxing muscle movements. It is a non-surgical treatment that prevents and softens moderate to severe wrinkles between the brows, around the eyes, and on the forehead. It can also be used for excessive underarm sweating, muscular disorders, “gummy smiles”, and more.
Myth #1: Frozen facial features
What do you think of when you imagine someone with Botox? If you think that getting Botox injections will make your facial features look less human and more like Spock, then you might have the wrong impression. The truth is, the treatment relaxes muscles at the point of injection. For example, Botox administered for crow’s feet reduces lines surrounding the outer corner of the eyes creating a brighter, less fatigued appearance.
Myth #2: Botox is only used for wrinkles and lines
Botoxhas multiple uses. Different areas can be treated such as gummy smiles, smoker lines, marionette lines, or lower eyelids. For example, patients with “gummy smiles” display excessive gums where the upper muscle that controls the movement could be hyperactive. Botox injections can be administered to relax the upper muscle and reduce gum exposure when smiling.
Myth #3: Lines will worsen if you stop using Botox
Botox injections will not make your wrinkles worse. Over the months following your treatment, wrinkles will eventually return to how they were initially.
Myth #4: Treatments are unsafe
Despite the common misconception, botulinum toxin is very safe. Botox has been FDA approved for multiple uses and has a safe history. Verifying credentials and certifications of the provider will ensure the safety and quality of your Botox treatment.
