Since 2001, radiofrequency has been used for non-surgical skin tightening. Radiofrequency, or RF, uses energy to stimulate collagen production, but unlike a laser, the heat energy is electrically-based rather than light-based. RF is a suitable option for most people. It can target loose skin on areas like the neck and chin but can be used on the body as well.

RF treatment on the body is geared towards fat reduction so it is often performed at a higher temperature, although it is generally painless and comes with no downtime. While it seems like there are no drawbacks associated with RF, it’s not a one and done. It takes time for the treatments to work and multiple sessions will be necessary to achieve optimal results.

Laser

Laser resurfacing mostly targets the surface of the skin and is designed to improve the texture of the skin. Lasers use light and heat energy to cause intentional damage to the skin’s surface so that your body then reacts to heal the tissue by creating new skin. Lasers can help to improve various skin problems such as acne scarring, wrinkles, fine lines, and sun damage. As for that tattoo you got in college? Lasers can help to remove that as well.

There are several different types of lasers ranging from ablative (the most powerful lasers) to nonablative, to fractioned. It’s important to discuss with your treatment provider which option is best for achieving your desired results.
