Dry and chapped lips

Kiss Dry and Chapped Lips Goodbye

During the colder months, many are plagued with scaly, cracked, and unsightly lips. While typical this time of year, no one likes it. There are things you can do to help to keep your lips nice through the winter. Kiss dry and chapped lips goodbye with some helpful tips and expert care when you need it.

What Causes Dry and Chapped Lips?

Texas doesn’t exactly get a “winter” per se like other more northern states. However, when the air gets cooler, the process to make that happen can dry our skin and lips out. The dew point measures how much moisture is in the air. The higher the dew point, the greater amount of moisture. Since it is cooler this time of year, the dew point is also lower. This means there is much less humidity in the air. Without the moisture from the humidity, things are drier, including our skin.

We are also in our homes more in the winter months, which are heated to keep us warm. The heat evaporates any moisture in the air, drying it out. Masks are now a part of our daily routine and cause heat and friction that can irritate the skin. In addition to the way they look, dry and chapped lips can be painful so lip care is essential.

How to Keep them Looking Great

Dry and chapped lips

Lips are typically an exposed part when we are out in the elements. That is why they, like our hands, bear the brunt of dryness. These tips will help you keep those lips in tip-top shape and moisturized:

  • Drink plenty of water each day to keep your body moisturized from the inside out.
  • Use a humidifier in your home to help keep the air from drying out.
  • Avoid using hot water for baths and showers. Use warm water instead.
  • Try to refrain from licking your lips. Licking removes the natural oils that keep them moisturized.
  • Use a medicated lip balm with an SPF 15 or higher and re-apply as needed. The balm will keep them moisturized and protected from the sun’s UV rays.
