Pregnancy and Skincare: What you Should Know

Pregnancy can bring a myriad of changes to your body, like a growing belly and curious cravings. Changes to your skin can also occur due to fluctuating hormone levels. Skin can become drier, acne can appear, and darkening of the skin may occur. These are just some of the more common skin issues pregnant women face. Keep your skin looking great all nine months and beyond with some tips from our in-house experts. Here’s what you should know about skincare during pregnancy.

Morning Skincare Routine Tips

These are some generic tips on what kinds of products to use for your morning and night skincare routines. The best products for your skin will vary from woman to woman, depending on skin type and underlying skin issues. You may want to include anti-aging products in your regimen, so choose ones that complement those goals as well.

Start with a good gentle cleanser with lukewarm water to clean the face. Tanya Gaines, one of Texas Dermatology’s P.A.s, says to follow cleaning with a Vitamin C serum with antioxidants to protect your skin during the day from the environment and free radicals. Then, apply a facial moisturizer, and end with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. It should be a mineral based sunscreen with an SPF 30 or more. Mineral sunscreens are safer than chemical ones, particularly during pregnancy. Look for zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and iron oxide on the active ingredients list.

Evening Skincare Tips

Use lukewarm water and gentle cleanser to remove all the makeup, dirt, and oil from the face. Then apply a correcting serum to help even out skin tone. Vitamin C antioxidant serum will help brighten skin tone as well. End with applying a facial moisturizer. Our P.A. Ivanna Saucedo’s nighttime routine consists of starting with the Revision Skin Brightening Cleanser, followed by the ISDIN Melatonik nighttime serum, and ending with Revision Nectifirm Advanced for the neck and décolleté.

There are a lot of different skin products on the market; it can be overwhelming. Depending on your overall skin goals, you may find products that combine various therapies may make it a bit easier.
