Protect Your Skin This Spring Break

After the holidays, it can be difficult to get back on the reality swing. Yet, the changing of the seasons reminds us of the anticipated week in March, Spring Break! Spring Break is a time we can relax and enjoy company with family and friends, and the last thing you need is to come back to work with charred shoulders and umpteen mosquito bites to show for.

Whether you are taking a beach trip to Mustang Island or camping out at Big Bend; without proper protection, the outdoor elements can wreak havoc on your skin. Here are some ways you can help prevent skin irritation, bug bites or sunburn during your Spring Break.

Under the Sun

Protecting your skin from the sun is vital. Frequent UV light exposure from the sun can increase the risk of melanoma, a form of skin cancer characterized by the uncontrolled growth of cells.

Founder of Texas Dermatology, Dr. John Browning M.D. says, “When getting direct sun be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses when possible.” Dr. Browning continues, “The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher and UVA protection.  Be sure to reapply every four hours and after swimming.” Read more from Dr. Browning!

Bug Off

Densely-wooded areas, stagnant waters, and high grasses are ideal environments for bugs and insects. Using insect repellent can help protect your skin from pesky bugs like mosquitoes and ticks. Follow the instructions on your insect repellant to ensure proper use.

Cover Up

If you’re planning a hike in wooded or grassy areas, wearing appropriate clothing can protect your skin from poisonous plants and thorns. Protect your skin with long-sleeves, hats, pants, long socks, and closed shoes to prevent itchy encounters with poison ivy and other plants.
