ABOUT FUNGAL INFECTIONS

Fungal infections are a common type of skin problem that can also affect the hair and nails. Also called tinea, infections can occur on any part of the body. Ringworm, jock itch and athletes foot are some of the most recognized names for fungal infections on the body. Fungal infections frequently affect teens and children, but adults can also get fungal infections.

CAUSES OF FUNGAL INFECTIONS

Caused by an overgrowth of microscopic organisms, fungal infections flourish in areas that are moist, warm and prone to sweating. Fungal infections are contagious, spreading by contact with infected skin or personal items such as combs, clothing, towels and infected surfaces. They can also be transmitted from pets.

SYMPTOMS OF A FUNGAL INFECTION

Fungal infections lead to the development of raised patches of skin that are itchy and scaly. Skin patches are usually redder around the edges, forming a rounded shape or ring. Blisters often form on infected skin, and skin discoloration may be noticeable. If the infection is present where hair typically grows, bald patches may also develop.

TREATMENT FOR FUNGAL INFECTIONS

Topical medications are usually effective for treating fungal infections. However in some cases, oral medications may also be needed. A dermatologist will prescribe the best treatment after examining the infection.
